Week 15: Final Video

Craft:  In order to put this video together I first had to import the small file that I made of my poster into premiere.  After I imported the layers, I imported my video and set it at the very bottom of my layers so that it would fall in as my background.  After that I moved all my sequenced layers into the positions I wanted them into the timeline.

Composition:  I took my original poster design and put all of the information on the very back of the timeline so that they would show up and the end of the video so it would play just as an actual movie trailer would play.  Afterward I let the movie play as my background for the whole time so the viewer would be drawn into it the entire time.

Concept:  The idea behind the video was to continue the Clerks franchise, in theory, that Kevin Smith made in the past.  I wanted to be able to capture a moment that is always popular in the movies where the two main characters sit and argue something pointless, so in mine I had them argue Lord of the Rings since they're supposed to be nerdy, and had it end with the customer chiming in and annoying them.

Special Edition Blog

Craft: The artist crafted this statue out of what appears to be bronze or some kind of stone.  The artist first had to find someone to model their statue head off of.  After that they carved in detail what their model looked like using scapel to stone.

Concept:This is a painting of bizarre people in a bar.  It shows the weirdness and exoticness of the people you can find in a particular bar.  I believe the artist is trying to say that with enough alcohol or strange people surrounding you, everyone can begin to look bizarre and strange.

Composition:  The artist used diffferent colors and hues to draw the viewer to different things.  The brighter colors towards the bottom draws the viewers eye downward to the things going on to the bottom.  After that, the eye slowly wanders from the bottom left over to the bottom right.  After the bottom right the eye wanders up to what is going on in the rest of the painting

Week 14: Final draft poster

Craft:  I first started by opening up my photoshop document that I had made and posted in the previous blog.  Since I had planned on making my video my background, I had deemed it unneccessary to keep the photo and the box behind it so I deleted both of those layers.  After I decided that the white box for Clerks 3 needed to be smaller and lose the paint effect that I had added.  In order to do so, I first used the rectangle tool and made one on either side of the Clerks 3 box and used the eraser tool to get rid of it and bring the black background into place.  After that, I used another rectangle tool to go over the paint brush tool I used and erased that too.

Composition:  I had really wanted to cut back on what I had text wise because the poster was mainly about the video since I was working on composing a movie trailer.  I left Clerks 3 black text on a white background because I still wanted it to stand out more than anything else.  I left the bottom the same because I wanted it to be the last thing the viewer was drawn to once again.

Concept: The poster is for Clerks 3.  Clerks 3 is again the third installment of a Clerks trilogy that was written and directed by Kevin Smith.  The poster gives the name of the movie, the price, where it is premiering, and what time.

week 13: poster rough draft

Craft: I made this picture using photoshop.  I first selected the text that I wanted to use the poster.  After I had them selected I started by making a new layer and painting it entirely black. After that I created a new layer and put a rectangle across the top and painted it white.  Once it was entirely white I took the font I chose for the title and typed in Clerks 3.  After that I created a new layer and made the box in the bottom left hand corner and painted it grey.  Once it was grey I made 3 new text layers and typed in the information using the font I had selected.  After that I made a new layer and made a grey box for where my photo is.  Once that was made I put in a new layer and posted pasted the photo I took on my digital camera into place.  Finally I made a new layer and made a white paint brush and used it towards the top to make it look like ripped paper.

Composition: I first put the title at the top and made it large so it would attract the eye of the viewer.  I made it a black text on a white background so it would stick out more.  Next I put the picture more to the left center so that the eye wouldn't be drawn there right away, but left it in color so the viewer would still notice it second.  Finally I put the small grey box in the right hand corner because it was the least important and I wanted the viewers to see it last.

Concept.  This is a poster for a movie called "Clerks 3."  It's a third installment off a Clerks series made by Kevin Smith.  It states what time the premiere is, how much, and where it's at so anyone that is interested is able to attend

Week 12: Final Brush project

Craft: I made these by turning on several layers and just stamping in random places to see how they looked.  The only steps that were really necessary were making the stamps that were explained in my last blog and then transferring them to a new project.  In the new project they were put in several layers and mixed between a red and orange hue.  From there layers were turned on and off to make the project.

Composition:  For the most part the arrangement just kind of came on its own.  In the first one I wanted to cluster several forms of communication into one piece so that they could be all shown at once.  In the second one I showed how one message can be shown across several different communication methods.  The third had to do strictly with radio communication and the final one was how with too much communication methods the message slowly disappears and it becomes all noise.

Concept:  The photos are all of some form of communication.  I'm trying to show how different communicational methods can either have positive or negative messages whether in the 1st one where we have tons of methods of communicating to the fourth where too many ways just turn things into noise.

Week 11: Drawing stamps

Craft:  The first thing I did was open up photoshop.  I then selected 10 pictures that I liked off the internet and traced over them.  From there I turned them into brushes. Once they had been traced and turned into brushes I was able to use them as stamps for future work.

Composition:  I arrange these pictures really in any order, I just wanted to be able to show the stamps that I had made for the project.  I had put the larger ones towards the bottom and let the smaller ones sit at the top so that you'd read the photo from a different perspective than top to bottom.

Concept:  The stamps have a computer, peace sign, walkie talkies, a telephone sign, a television, a radio tower, a telephone, a microphone, two people speaking, a radio, and a written signature.  They're all on here because of the fact that they are all forms of communication in one way or another.

Week 10: Final Radio Digital Draft

Craft: I first started by opening up photoshop and using a former sketch I had drawn up.  I first created all the rectangular shapes by using the rectangular tool in different layers.  After they were made I took the elliptical option and made all of the circles that I needed for the project.  I made each in a new layer and once all were created I then focused on using a paint brush to create the objects that didn't fall under the rectangle or elliptical tools.  After that was created I took the paint bucket tool and dumped paint into the different layers and shapes so I could properly get the colors I wanted.  After that, I finally went through and used all of the bevel and emboss fx's to create the desired look I wanted with my shapes.

Composition:  I arranged the photo first by making the two radios the largest thing in the photo.  I wanted to do this so that the viewer's eye will be drawn to the radios that are both happy and sad.  From there I made the door stand out to show the way for the people to escape from the bad radio and make it to the good radio.  I then chose to use a green color because it seemed inviting while I used blue for the sad radio for sadness.

Concept:  The picture is of people hating ordinary radio and escaping from it by going through the door and dancing to the good radios music.  It's to help show a way to escape from ordinary radio.

Week 9: First radio digital draft

Craft:  I first took an image and scanned it onto the computer.  After I scanned it I began to take the box tool in photo shop and created to squares and dropped brown paint into them.  After I dropped the paint into them I made the circles for the speakers.  I used the elliptical tool to create the bigger speakers and then the smaller ones inside them.  After I created those I took the rectangular tool again and used them to make the eye brows and tuner box on top of the radios.  After that I used the lasso tool in order to create the mouths of the radios.  Finally I took the rectangular tool to create a wall between the two radios.  I finally dumped the paint that is seen in all the pictures in order to give it the color I wanted.  I ended the process by choosing the bevel and emboss fx on all the layers to give them more definition.

Composition: I separated the two radios to show the differences between the two.  The one is angry and shows how ordinary radio doesn't keep people happy anymore and on the other side I have a happy radio that shows how people are happy with change and new music.  I'm controlling the viewers eyes by using the radios towards the top and making them the biggest thing in the picture.

Concept:  The picture is of two radios that have been personified.  The personified radios show the difference between the music being played.  The happy radio shows new music being played and its an escape from the angry radio that is playing music that nobody wants to hear.

Week 8: Final draft sketch

Craft: I made this picture using pen to paper.  There were not many steps that went with it.  I simply came up with the idea of two radios performing and then drew what I envisioned.

Composition: I drew the picture the way it did so that you can clearly tell which radio is good and which is bad.  On the top part is the angry radio that plays the same tunes over and over which leaves the listeners upset and wanting to escape.  On the divider a door was added so that they can go through and escape the noise.  On the other side is a happy looking radio that provides music that people actually want to listen to. I drew both radios large so that the viewer has to look at them first and see the faces on them.

Concept:  The picture is of two radios playing music to an audience.  The one is "ordinary radio" and plays music that no one wants to hear.  The other is happy and playing music that everyone wants to listen to.  I'm trying to portray that ordinary radio is not fun to listen to while escaping from it to a new station can give you music worth listening and dancing to.

Week 7: First draft sketches

Craft:  I made this picture by taking pen to unlined paper.  There were not to many necessary steps needed outside the idea to draw and then being able to draw the idea onto the paper

Composition:  I drew the two pictures in two particular ways.  In the first picture I drew a sad radio getting punched by a new muscular one.  I chose to draw it like this because I wanted to show ordinary radio getting knocked out of the way by a new and stronger radio.  In the other image I drew two different worlds in which the radios live.  On the one side I have original radio in a rainy and sad environment because I wanted to show that ordinary radio has been dreary and sad.  On the other side I have a happy radio with a sunny sky and everything is happy.  I did this so that it can show a clear escape from ordinary radio.

Concept: In both pictures the central focus is the radio.  The two radios are being compared as opposites because of the fact that one is terrible and needs to be taken away from the new radio which brings good music to all.  I wanted to be able to show that old radio is sad and that new radio trumps it either with happiness or with strength.

Week 5: Cookie Collage part 2

Craft:  I took the cookie and spread them amongst three new document tabs.  In each one I used free transform to have different sizes of cookies.  I moved them around on the screen so they eventually made the image that was uploaded and eventually took a screen shot of all 3 of them together to upload to this website.

Composition:  In this picture there are both some key similarities and differences in all 3 of them.  One of the similarities is the obvious fact that the only thing involved is a cookie.  Another similarity is that all of them have at least one giant cookie in all of them as a background.  A differnce in all of them is the different sizes of each cookie. The first picture starts really close to the cookie as a background and as each picture progresses the background cookie slowly gets smaller and smaller.  Another difference is the arrangement of the cookies and how many of them there are.  In the first one there are only two cookies, both of which are rather large and while one takes up the whole background, the other only peeks in from the side.  The second one has several cookies in it and there a ton of small ones set in a circle between the two medium size ones all overlapping over the large one.  The final picture just has a larger cookie has a background followed up by two medium ones just randomly placed over the bigger one.

Concept:  This picture is just of a cookie collage.  The cookies are scattered around each collage to leave the viewer hungry for a cookie but all that is involved with this photo is just cookies

Week 4: Collage

Craft: In this picture I took several steps in order for the collage to take place.  The first step I took was to take the picture of the cookie using my digital camera.  After I took the picture with my camera I uploaded it to my computer and transfered it over to my USB.  Once it was on my USB I took it over to class, re uploaded it on to a new computer and opened it in photoshop.  Once opened in photoshop I layered my photo and then began deleting all the excess pixels that I did not need.  Once they were all deleted and all I had left was the cookie, I then preceeded to open 3 new documents and dragged and dropped the cookie several times onto all of them. Once they were all on I then free transformed at least one so it was large enough to create a giant cookie background.  Once that was made I free transformed the rest of the cookies so they would be different sizes and shapes so that each picture would look a little bit unique.  In the end I took a screen shot of my work and uploaded it to this site.

Composition:  I made these three collages the way they were so that the viewer would just think instantly of the cookies.  I have a giant cookie background and the small ones scattered around each photo so that the viewer has no choice but to be drawn to the cookies and the feeling they leave after you view them, which is of course hungry.

Concept:  In the simplest terms this picture is just of cookies set into a collage.  Some are made larger than others but all in all they are nothing more than three collage pictures of cookies and nothing else.

Week 3: Food Part 2

Craft:  I made this picture by taking the christmas cooking and putting it on the fire alarm.  I then stood underneath it and took the picture upward to make the cookie look larger.  I then zoomed in a little bit and turned off the flash so I could get the image that I wanted.

Composition:  I set the cookie on the fire alarm because I felt that it would be a weird place to find a cookie.  I wanted to be underneath it so that the small food would look larger than its suppose to.  With the red from the alarm on top and bottom and the cookie being a different color, the viewers eye is being pulled to where the cookie is at over anything else.

Concept:  In the simplest terms the picture is of a cookie on a fire alarm.  It's kind of weird to see a cookie on a fire alarm and could even come to a joke like "grab a snack as you escape the fire!" I'm mainly tring to show that the food can be bigger with the proper angle and the fire alarm just makes everything look strange.

Week 2: Food

Craft: I made this picture by taking jelly belly jelly beans and arranging them to say food on a table.  I then took my digital camera and stood on a chair above the table and took the picture facing in a downward direction, making sure to do my best to try and center it.

Composition: I wanted to do something fun with my food and would make things interesting for whoever looks at it.  I made the jellybeans spell something so that the viewers eye will instantly be drawn to the food.  I also tried to pick more brighter color jelly beans so that it would catch the eye quicker and to show that it is the main piece.  Finally I left it centered on the table so that it would instantly be the first thing seen.

Concept: The picture is of just jelly beans spelling the word "Food." The meaning is simply that jelly beans are something you eat and so therefore they spelt out to say food so you know to eat them.

Week 1: Intro

I originally attended Saint Xavier with the intentions of becoming a secondary education teacher with a focus in Political Science.  Halfway through the semester I grew to realize that I no longer had an interest in education and decided to go into film and video. Since Saint Xavier does not have much in film and video, I've decided to transfer to Columbia next semester to pursue the degree. As of now I'm taking a mix of art and design classes along with a few general education classes to get them done and out of the way.
